June is national dysphagia awareness month. Bringing awareness to a condition that can impact so many is an important part of our mission. 1 in 25 adults will experience a swallowing problem in the United States. Dysphagia can contribute to malnutrition, dehydration, aspiration pneumonia, choking and in some instances death. Proper management is imperative to the support and well being of the people that experience this condition both short and long term.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics® has announced that the Nutrition Care Manual® will be replacing the current National Dysphagia Diet intervention tools with the new International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) guidance. IDDSI is intended to provide safety through common terminology for all ages, in all care settings and all cultures. IDDSI helps provide an additional level of measurable description to each classification to ensure appropriate and consistent intervention is easily provided and replicated in all care settings.
